Industrial employment changes 0.2% in July

 

In July 2012, the total of employed persons in the industry posted a positive change of 0.2% against the immediately previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, interrupting four months of consecutive negative results in this Kind of comparison -period in which it accumulated a loss of 1.2%. Still concerning the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index, with a change of 0,1% between the quarters ended in June and July, kept the prevailing negative behavior seen since October last year.  In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the industrial employment declined 1.6% in July 2012, the tenth negative consecutive result in this kind of comparison, but less intense than the ones observed last May (-1.7%) and June (-1.8%).  The index accumulated in the first seven months of 2012 marked an decrease of 1.3% over the same period a year ago. The annual rate (index accumulated in the last 12 months), recording -0.7% in July 2012, kept the downward trend begun in February 2011 (3.9%).

Comparing with the same month last year, the industrial employment receded 1.6% in July 2012, with the contingent of employees recording reduction in twelve of the fourteen places surveyed.  The main negative impact on the overall average was observed in São Paulo (-3.1%), pushed at a great extent by the negative rates recorded in 14 of the 18 sectors surveyed. The highlight was the drop in the total number of employed persons in the industries of fabricated metal products (-12.4%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-10.6%), basic metals (-17.3%), transportation means (-4.6%), apparel (-9.1%), textiles (-7.0%), and footwear and leather (-12.4%).

It is also worth mentioning the negative results posted in the Northeast Region (-2.0%), influenced by the drops in the sectors of apparel (-5.7%), textiles (-9.8%) and transportation means (-11.7%); in Rio Grande do Sul (-2.3%), due to losses occurred in footwear and leather (-10.6%), tobacco (-18.2%), rubber and plastic (-7.8%) and other products of the manufacturing industry (-3.8%); in the North and Central-West Regions (-1.2%), pushed by the reductions coming from wood (-13.9%), non-metallic minerals (-9.3%), rubber and plastic (-15.1%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-5.5%); Santa Catarina (-1.2%), particularly influenced by the drops in apparel (-9.3%), wood (-12.9%), footwear and leather (-17.9%) and textiles (-2.5%); and Pernambuco (-2.8%), due to decrease in the number of employed persons in the industries of food and beverages (-5.4%) and transportation means (-27,9%).

On the other hand, Paraná (1.5%) and Minas Gerais (1.0%) marked the main positive contributions on the industrial employment in the country. The highlights were the segments of communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (32.5%) and food and beverages (5.7%), in the industry in Paraná, and of fabricated metal products (8.9%), mining and quarrying industries (8.4%) and transportation means (4.5%), in the Minas Gerais’ industrial sector.

Among the sectors, considering the monthly index, the total of salaried employed persons contracted in 14 of the 18 sectors surveyed. The highlights were the negative results from apparel (-8.7%), footwear and leather (-6.0%), textiles (-5.4%), paper and press (-3.9%), transportation means (-2.4%), wood (-8.3%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-3.5%), basic metals (-4.0%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-2.2%) and fabricated metal products (-1.9%).  On the other hand, the main positive impact on the industry average was seen in the sector of food and beverages (3.8%)

In the index accumulated in the first seven months of 2012, the industrial employment kept the falling movement (-1.3%), with negative rates in nine of the 14 places and in 13 of the 18 sectors surveyed. Among the places, São Paulo (-3.2%) marked the main negative impact in the industry overall, followed by the Northeast Region (-2.0%), Santa Catarina (-1.5%), Ceará (-3.0%), Bahia (-2.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-0.8%). On the other hand, Paraná (4.0%) and Minas Gerais (1.9%) exerted the major positive influences. Among the sectors, the most relevant negative contributions on the national average came from apparel (-7.7%), footwear and leather (-6.4%), fabricated metal products (-4.7%), wood (-9.0%), paper and press (-4.0%) and rubber and plastic (-3.3%), whereas the sectors of food and beverages (3.8%), machinery and equipment (2.0%), mining and quarrying (4.2%) were responsible for the main positive impacts.

 

Number of hours paid in July changes 0.3% in relation to June

 

In July of 2012, the number of hours paid to industrial workers, discounted the seasonal influences, posted a positive change of 0,3% against the immediately previous month, interrupting four months of consecutive negative rates that accumulated, in this period, a loss of 2,8%.  For that reason, in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index presented a negative rate (-0.2%) between the quarters closed in June and July, and kept the downward trend started last February.

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the number of hours paid marked, in July 2012 (-2,5%), the eleventh consecutive negative rate in that type of comparison. The accumulated index in the first seven months of the year also posted a negative result (-2.0%), sharpening the falling pace over the previous months.  The annual rate (index accumulated in the last 12 months), recording a retraction of 1.6% in July 2012, kept the downward trend started in February of 2011 (4.5%).

In July 2012, the number of hours paid reduced 2.5% in relation to the same month in the previous year, with negative rates in twelve of the fourteen places and in fifteen of the eighteen sectors surveyed. Among the sectors, the main negative influences came from apparel (-9.6%), footwear and leather (-6.0%), transportation means (-3.0%), other products of the manufacturing industry (-4.6%), textiles (-4.7%), paper and press (-4.3%) and basic metals (-5.9%). Conversely, food and beverages (1.4%), mining and quarrying industries (4.1%) and chemical products (0.6%) registered the positive results this month.

Among the places, as compared to the same month a year ago, São Paulo (-4.4%) posted the main negative influence on the country overall, pushed at a great extent by the reduction in the number of hours paid in the sectors of communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-12.4%), fabricated metal products (-11.3%), basic metals (-22.5%), transportation means (-5.7%) and apparel (-11.9%). It is also worth mentioning that the negative impacts registered by Rio Grande do Sul (-3.9%), mainly due to drops recorded in footwear and leather (-12.0% ), rubber and plastic (-11.4%), transportation means (-5.3% ) and other products of the manufacturing industry (-4.2%); the Northeast Region (-2.3%), mostly attributable to the decline seen in apparel (-7.3%), food and beverages (-2,1%), textiles (-7.1%) and transportation means (-12.7%); and the North and Central-West Region (-2.3%), pushed at a great extent by the decreases coming from wood (-13.9%), non-metallic minerals (-11.9%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (-8.9%).          On the other hand, Minas Gerais (0.9%) and Paraná (1.0%) exerted positive contributions to the total number of hours paid, pushed at a great extent by the growth in the sectors fabricated metal products (8.3%), transportation means (6.4%), and basic metals (6.5%), in the former place, and in communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (42.6%) and food and beverages (2.0%) in the latter.

In the index accumulated in the first seven months of 2012, there was a downfall of 2.0% in the number of hours paid, with 14 of the 18 sectors surveyed reporting negative rates. The major negative influences on the overall average of the industry came from apparel (-8.3%), footwear and leather (-6.4%), fabricated metal products (-4.7%), textiles (-4.7%), paper and press (-4.1%), wood (-8.7%), rubber and plastic (-3.4%), basic metals (-4.9%) and non-metallic minerals (-2.6%). Conversely, the most relevant positive contribution on the total number of hours paid to the industry employees came from food and beverages (1.8%), followed by machinery and equipment (1.5%) and mining and quarrying industries (4.1%).  Concerning the regions, 12 of the 14 places presented negative rates, with a highlight to the contraction of 4.1% observed in São Paulo, followed by the losses in the Northeast Region (-1,7%), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.2%), Santa Catarina (-2.1%), Bahia (-3.6%) and the North and Central-West Region (-1.1%).  However, Paraná (1.7%) and Minas Gerais (1.2%) posted the positive rates in the index accumulated from January to July of 2012.

In short, the industrial employment and the number of hours paid in the industry, in July 2012, registered again a positive rate against the immediately previous month, after four months in a row of negative results, a period in which they accumulated drops of 1.2% and 2.8%, respectively.  It is worth mentioning that the positive indexes this month reflect at a great extent the slight rise of the industrial output in the last two months. The evolution of the quarterly moving average index, even though keeping the prevailing negative behavior which characterizes this indicator since the end of last year, reinforces this moment of subtle gain of dynamism of the industrial sector. In this indicator, the total of salaried employed persons and the number of hours paid mark a decrease in the falling pace these last months.

In the comparison with the same month a year ago, the industrial employment and the number of hours paid keep registering negative rates in July 2012, but both posting less intense losses than the ones observed last May and June.  The index accumulated in the first seven months of the year remained pointing negative results and kept the dissemination of negative rates among the places and sectors surveyed.

 

Real Payroll falls 1.0% in July

 

In July 2012, the value of the real payroll of the industry workers (seasonally adjusted) contracted 1.0% compared with the immediately previous month, eliminating part of the expansion of 2.5% registered last June.  It is worth highlighting that in this month’s result, there is a negative behavior both of the manufacturing industry (-0.8%) and of the mining and quarrying sector (-0.6%). In the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index recorded a negative change of 0.3% between the quarters ended in June and July, after having remained stable in the previous month (0.0%).

Contrasting with the same month of the previous year, the real payroll rose by 2.5% in July 2012, the 31st consecutive positive result in this kind of comparison. The accumulated index in the first seven months of 2012 pointed a rise of 3.7%, reducing the growing pace contrasted to the one observed in the end of the first semester of the year (3.9%) - both comparisons made against the same period in the previous year.  The annual rate (index accumulated in the last 12 months), expanding 3.6% in July of 2012, repeated the result recorded in the previous month.

In the comparison with the same month of the previous year, the value of the real payroll recorded an expansion of 2.5% in July 2012, with positive results in 12 of the 14 places surveyed. The major influences on the national overall were seen in Minas Gerais (5.6%), mostly pushed by the increase in the value of the payroll in the sector of communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (23.5%), transportation means (9.0%) and food and beverages (5.8%); Paraná (6.7%), influenced by communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (43.0%), food and beverages (10.5%) and machinery and equipment (11.4%) and the Northeast Region (5.5%), mainly reinforced by basic metals (33.2%), food and beverages (4.3%) and transportation means (18.0%).

It is worth mentioning as well the advances seen in Rio de Janeiro (5.6%), the North and Central-West regions (5.0%), Bahia (10.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.0%) and Santa Catarina (3.7%). In those places, the activities that mostly contributed in a positive way to the rise in the real payroll were: mining and quarrying industries (9.8%), fabricated metal products (20.6%), food and beverages (10.0%) and machinery and equipment (12.2%), in Rio de Janeiro; food and beverages (12.0%), mining and quarrying industries (13.3%) and transportation means (17.3%), in the North and Central-West Regions; transportation means (73.1%), basic metals (32.9%), fabricated metal products (33.7%) and mining and quarrying industries (9.7%) in Bahia; food and beverages (9.2%), and  machinery and equipment (6.8%), in Rio Grande do Sul; and food and beverages (6.6%) in Santa Catarina.  Conversely, São Paulo (-0.5%) registered the most relevant negative impact this month, particularly influenced by the sector of transportation means (-4.9%).

Among the sectors, still considering the monthly index of July 2012, the value of the real payroll in the in the country overall grew in ten of the 18 sectors surveyed, with a highlight to food and beverages (7.5%), machinery and equipment (5.8%), mining and quarrying industries (7.7%), chemical products (4.4%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (4.2%), petroleum refinement and alcohol production (5.5%) and non-metallic minerals (3.0%). Conversely, the sectors of transportation means (-1.3%), apparel (-4.6%) and textiles (-3.4%) exerted the greatest negative impacts on the industry overall.

In the indicator accumulated in the first seven months 2012, the value of the real payroll rose by 3.7%, with positive rates in all 14 places surveyed, with a highlight to Minas Gerais (7.9%) and Paraná (9.9%), attributable at a great extent to the gains in the sectors of mining and quarrying (20.7%), communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (15.6%), transportation means (-5.8%), food and beverages (5.9%), non-metallic minerals (11.5%) and of machinery and equipment (8.0%), in the first place, and of food and beverages (13.6%) and communication and electric-electronic machinery and apparatus (40.7%) and transportation means (11.9%), in the second.  It is worth mentioning as well the positive contributions seen in the Northeast region (5.9%), Rio de Janeiro (6.6%), North and Central-West regions (6.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.9%) and Santa Catarina (3.7%). In those places, the activities that most contributed in a positive way were, respectively, food and beverages (7.9%), chemical products (11.0%) and mining and quarrying industries (7.5%); mining and quarrying industries (11.1%), transportation means (6.5%) and food and beverages (9.6%); food and  beverages (12.7%) and mining and quarrying industries (19.2%); machinery and equipment (8.4%), transportation means (7.8%) and food and beverages (5.4%); and machinery and equipment (10.6%) and food and  beverages (8.1%).

Among the sectors, considering the index accumulated in the year, the value of the real payroll advanced in 13 of the 18 activities surveyed, leveraged particularly by the gains coming from food and beverages (7.9%), machinery and equipment (7.3%), mining and quarrying industries (13.5%), transportation means (2.5%) and non-metallic minerals (4.6%). On the other hand, the sectors of apparel (-3.3%), footwear and leather (-3.0%), wood (-5.2%) and textiles (-2.1%) exerted the greatest negative influences on the industry overall.
